Our Programs
The Gahanna Veterans Memorial Committee plans and presents two public Veteran recognition programs each year, the first on Memorial Day and the second on Veterans Day.
Each program is planned by the committee with a structured agenda for that day with multiple guests including a keynote speaker, local singers to perform patriotic songs, a brick dedication for the Veterans with bricks being placed in the memorial, an official Honor Guard by American Legion Post 797 and members of VFW Post 4719, a rifle volley with Taps and a closing prayer to honor all Veterans and their families. Over the last several years the names of those Veterans that have bricks being placed have been announced during the program for family that may be in attendance.
Both programs are held at the Gahanna Veterans Memorial Park that was built by local volunteer/Veterans and officially dedicated in May of 2000. The park is located at 73 Johnstown Rd Gahanna, Ohio 43230 and features a number of amenities including a 5-sided granite monolith, an eternal flame at the top of the monolith, a granite time capsule enclosure, granite benches around the perimeter of the plaza, our nation’s flag, state and city flags and military service banners. The park has 10,000 bricks with close to 3,000 that are engraved with Veteran’s information.
In May the annual Memorial Day brick dedication program is held at 1:00PM and on November 11th the Veterans Day program is held at 11:00AM. Each of these ceremonies is significant and play an important role in our tribute to our military members lost through wars and conflicts, and those still living.
In the future there are plans to make some long needed improvements to the park to add things like interactive stations throughout the park noting historical and significant military details, new signage, an updated entryway and other needed improvements. More information will be posted when available.
